The design brief was to design a mezzanine gallery, to improve access to the loft storage above the bedrooms slotted within the volumn of a pitched roof of a Grade II listed building within the Holland Park Conservation Area.

The structural support for the mezzanine gallery was formed from mild steel sections, with nested RSA's to take a 12mm thick toughened glass balustrade with a 42mm dia stainless steel slotted handrail.

The gallery was to have a glass floor which was made up of triple laminated toughened glass floor panels, wtih the top panel sandblasted to create an anti slip surface.

Access to the mezzanine gallery was gained via a bespoke spiral staircase. The spiral staircase was constructed from a 100mm dia central stainless steel column with triangular laminated glass treads and a helical stainless steel string rising on the outside to support the treads and the balustrade. Each tread was notched along its edges to slot into a fabricated triangular stainless steel tray. The helical string comprised of a pair of rolled stainless steel plates spaced with hardwood packers, the balustrade was made up of a series of 12mm thick curved acrylic sheets, which were clamped between the strings. There was a curved 42mm dia stainless steel handrail fixed to the top of the acrylic balustrade panels.
